Municipal Art Society of New York

Since 1997, Ms. Bradley has produced the annual presentations of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal benefiting the Municipal Art Society (MAS). This medal was created in memory of Mrs. Onassis and her tireless efforts to preserve and protect New York’s great architecture. The medal has been presented each year, since 1994, to individuals for their outstanding efforts towards improving the quality of life in New York City. Past recipients have been Brendan Gill, I.M. Pei, Margot Gayle and Robert De Niro (jointly), Stephen Swid, Frederic Papert, James S. Polshek George Trescher, Agnes Gund, WNET/Channel Thirteen, Janet and Arthur Ross.

Past MAS events have included:

  • The 1998 Grand Central Gala celebrating the magnificent revitalization of the Terminal and commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the Landmarks Law that preserved it. Chaired by Caroline Kennedy, with First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton as Honorary Patron; Brooke Astor as Honorary Chair and brothers Steve and Tom Florio, of Condé Nast, as the event Co-Chairs. Three components comprised the event: a reception held on the East balcony, followed by dinner in Vanderbilt Hall for 1,000 guests and a dance for an additional 1,100 guests held on the Main Concourse where the Peter Duchin Orchestra and D.J. Tom Finn provided lively music. The event raised than 1.2 million dollars.
  • The 1999 event co-hosted by the Municipal Art Society and LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton at which LVMH unveiled its new headquarters on East 57th Street. The gala saluted the LVMH Tower and its architect Christian de Portzamparc. The evening began with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. at the Christian Dior store in the LVMH Tower, simultaneously a small reception for First Lady Hillary Clinton was held in the Newseum/NY. Both were followed by a light show then dinner in the Sculpture Garden at 590 Madison Avenue.
  • The 2002 MAS event honoring architect James Stewart Polshek which took place in one of his masterpieces, the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History. The evening began with cocktails in the Cullman Hall of the Universe followed by dinner in the Power House over-looking the Arthur Ross Terrace of the Rose Center.
  • The 2003 MAS event posthumously honoring George Trescher at Capital, the landmarked Bowery Savings Bank, designed by Stanford White. The Honorary Chairs were: Brooke Astor and Caroline Kennedy; Dinner Chairs: Dorothy and Lewis Cullman, Annette and Oscar de la Renta, Ashton Hawkins, Elizabeth and Felix Rohatyn, and Liz Smith. The event featured special performances by Bobby Short, Barbara Cook and Elaine Stritch. George’s good friend Liz Smith served as the MC.
  • The 2006 MAS event honoring Janet and Arthur Ross. Honorary Co-Chairs for the event were Robin Chandler Duke, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Marian S. Heiskell, Amb. Jean Kennedy Smith, Amb. William J. vanden Heuvel. Dinner Chairs were Audrey and Danny Meyer, and Samantha and Aby Rosen. The event took place at Eleven Madison Avenue, an Art Deco masterwork, designed by Harvey Wiley Corbett. The event was catered by Danny Meyer’s company Hudson Yards.
